Earnings Report: Mid-August Check-In

I don’t normally do a mid-month check-in, but things on Medium are a little weird (in a good way!), and I needed a place to write about it.

In last month’s report, I mentioned that August earnings were already doing well, and that has continued to be the case so far. I’ll show you in a minute…

But first, let me do a mini-recap of Medium’s July stats.

  • Reads: 15,000
  • Followers: 6,911
  • Earnings: $983.71
  • EPR (earnings per read): $0.07

Now let’s take a look at August’s stats so far. I’m writing this on August 11, 2025. Views, reads, and followers are up-to-date. Earnings are up to August 10.

Reads & Views:

As you can see, we’re 11 days into the month, and my views are already 4,000 more than last month, and reads are almost 2,000 more than last month.

Followers:

I hit two mini-milestones in the followers category.

  • 1k email subscribers

These don’t mean *too* much, but it’s an indication that people are enjoying what I’m writing.

Earnings:

Last month I made $983, and I’m already almost to that point in August:

Just another day or two, and I should cross that mark.

This gives me an EPR of $0.05, which is pretty standard for me.

Let me give you a peak into my daily earnings:

They’ve been very good! I hit over $100 for three days in a row, which I’ve never done before.

So far, I’m on track to hit my next goal of making $2,000 in a month. A lot can happen between now and then, but I’ll do my part to help make it happen by…writing.

That’s really all I can do.

Then I have to pray to the Medium and Google gods that my work gets distributed.

Then I have to hope that people like it enough to give it a good read ratio.

Speaking of, I want to show you some interesting things happening with some of my read ratios and EPRs…

It’s nearly impossible to figure out what articles will do well and which ones won’t.

Here’s an article I didn’t think would do well, yet, it’s taking off like crazy:

My read ratio is very good, but I don’t have many claps or comments. Yet, it’s paying extremely well. In fact, my EPR on this article is the highest I’ve seen in a while at $0.08.

Here’s an article that’s doing well in terms of earnings, but its EPR is super low:

This one has slightly more claps and comments, and just a slightly lower read ratio, but still very good. But you can see that my reads are much higher, which should give me more earnings. Instead, Medium seems to have prioritized the other article for some unknown reason. As mentioned, that one has an EPR of $0.08, while this one’s EPR is $0.02.

These are the things about Medium that make you say, “hmmm…”

I hit another milestone with this article:

It’s the first time I’ve earned $2,000 on one story. This one has an EPR of $0.06.

Medium likes this one because it’s also ranking on Google. Here’s a search I did using an incognito window:

This helps bring new paying customers to Medium and they reward you for that by distributing your articles even more on the Medium platform.

This one slowed down a bit in July, then started rising again towards the end of July.

Here are the earnings for this article by month:

  • May (I published it on May 13): $548.62
  • June: $755.31
  • July: $400.76
  • August (so far): $459.15

Not bad for a couple hours of work!

Top-performing articles in August

Here’s everything that’s made at least $20 so far in August:

This is my favorite thing about writing on Medium. Something you wrote months ago can still earn you a nice income. I also have 94 more articles that have earned me from $0.02 to $9.87 in August so far. Those add up!

That’s it for my mid-month check-in.

I’ll see you in September for the full August run down!

  1. Great job on Medium!

When you promote your work do you share your friend link to social media, or share your regular link and hope that people sign up for Medium to read your story?

    • I don’t promote my articles very often. The only place I do it is in my newsletter, which I’ve only just restarted. When I was on Substack, I would share it there sometimes too. In any case, I use my friend link. If I add links to articles here on my site, I’ll also use a friend link. I honestly don’t care too much if someone signs up for Medium since they don’t have their referral program anymore. (It seems dumb that they removed that!)
